Healthy Homemade Popsicles + 3 Easy Recipes

Nothing beats an icy cold popsicle on a hot summer day! I love finishing our dinner by enjoying a popsicle together…is there anything better than watching a toddler enjoy an icy cold treat (all the facial expressions and excitement!)? We’ve been making our own popsicles and there’s many reasons why you should too! I’m writing about those below plus sharing our three favourite recipes to make your own healthy homemade popsicles at home. Let’s stay cool, shall we?

We love making popsicles at home – my daughter can’t wait to climb onto a chair and help me around in the kitchen! They are so easy and fun to create. Our favourite recipes include a mango coconut, watermelon mint (so refreshing!) and creamy strawberry rose popsicles. These all require only 4 ingredients or less and can be whipped up in just a few minutes. The hardest part is waiting for them to freeze up!

There quite some good reasons to make your own popsicles, and if you’ve never made them before, I encourage you to try them! Here are my top reasons to choose homemade popsicles over store bought ones:

  1. They are healthier – they contain no processed sugars, artificial flavouring or colouring and have often much better nutritional value (it’s pretty much dressed up frozen fruit).
  2. We produce less waste – such an easy way to say ‘no’ to individually wrapped ice pops! Skip all the plastic and cardboard boxes and make your popsicles waste free. It’s also a great way to use up overripe or leftover fruit to cut down waste even more.
  3. We save money – store bought brands can be pricey! Making your own can be lots cheaper, mine end up at least half the price of a regular brand in the shop.

What you’ll need to make your own popsicles:

Molds

I use these popsicle from Ikea which are a great budget option and small freezer friendly too. These molds would be great if I had a bigger freezer – I love the shape and size!

Alternatively, you could use simple cups, a muffin pan or even a cake tin! Have a look on Pinterest if you’re feeling adventurous and use what you already have in your home.

The quantities for the recipes are based on the IKEA mold which are 6 x 70ml. You can easily adjust the recipe to suit the size and amount of popsicles you want to make!

Blender

You’ll need something to mash the ingredients up into a fine smoothies. We are loving our high powered Blendtec – we use it pretty much daily to make creamy nutmilks, smoothies, sauces and yes, popsicles. If you don’t own a blender, a submersion blender or food processor will work just fine (just let the fruit defrost before blending).

Talking about flavour – the riper your fruit, the more flavour you’ll pack into these popsicles! I often use frozen fruits, but they are definitely not all equal when it comes to taste and ripeness. So it’s worth trying out a different brand if you’re not happy with the flavour. Overall, frozen food will taste less sweet and intense which is why your mix might taste perfectly fine before freezing it but be a little bland when frozen into a popsicle. I always aim to make mine slightly sweeter and more acidic then I would make a smoothie (mango or ripe bananas work great to add some extra sweetness).

Healthy Homemade Popsicles

Our favourite healthy homemade popsicles that are delicious for both kids & adults – choose from mango-coconut, minty watermelon or creamy strawberry rose!

Ingredients

Creamy Strawberry & Rose Popsicles

  • 2 cups strawberries frozen or fresh
  • 2 tbsp rosewater
  • 1/2 cup yoghurt
  • 2 tbsp honey or other sweetener optional

Mango Coconut Popsicles

  • 2 cups chopped mango frozen or fresh
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup full fat coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp lime juice

Watermelon Mint Popsicles

  • 2 1/2 cups chopped watermelon
  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp honey or other sweetener optional

Instructions

Creamy Strawberry & Rose Popsicles

  • Blend strawberries and rosewater together into a puree. If using a sweetener, add half to the strawberry puree and half to the yoghurt and mix.
  • Fill the molds in layers, starting with one third of strawberry puree, 1/3 of yoghurt and finish with another layer of puree. Use a small spoon to vertically stir the layers and create a swirling pattern.
  • Tap to remove any air bubbles, insert sticks and freeze for at least 4 hours.

Mango Coconut Popsicles

  • Blend the mango and orange juice into a fine puree. In another bowl, mix the coconut milk with the lime juice.
  • Divide the mango puree over the mold, leaving about a centimeter free at the top. Spoon the coconut milk over the top.
  • Tap to remove any air bubbles, insert sticks and freeze for at least 4 hours.

Watermelon Mint Popsicles

  • Blend watermelon, mint leaves, lime juice and sweetener (if using) together into a fine puree.
  • Fill the molds to the top and tap to remove any air bubbles. Insert sticks and freeze for at least 4 hours.

Notes

  • Remove popsicles from mold by running them under warm tap water for a few seconds or warming them up between your hands. The popsicles should slide out easily after that!
  • Use the ripest fruit for the most flavour and sweetness. If needed, you can add some extra sweetener like honey, agave or sugar. Sweet fruits like banana or mango can also be added instead.
  • These recipes yields 6 popsicles of about 70ml, based on the IKEA molds we use. You can store any leftovers up to 3 days in the fridge (to make more popsicles as they get eaten) or blend them into your smoothie, pour over your breakfast cereal…no need to waste anything!
