November 8, 2019

I got to try out a turkey and in this post I’ll tell you all about it: how it works & my honest review. Plus I got a fun GIVEAWAY in store to bring Christmas a little early for one of you!

Crowdbutching is part of Crowdbutching. I’ve known Crowdbutching for a couple of years now and I really love their concept. You basically get to buy a welfare animal together with other people – when the whole animal is sold, it’s butchered, portioned and delivered fresh to your door. They want to make the meat sector more transparent, healthy & sustainable. Beautiful hey? It really makes it easy for anyone who wants to eat better quality and traceable meat from animals that have been well looked after. They are currently operating in The Netherlands (, Germany ( and the UK (

Well, this year they partnered up with boer Anton Jacobs to raise well fare turkeys right here in the Netherlands! When I got asked by to review one of their stuffed turkeys, I was obviously in 🙂

How It Works: From Farm To Your (Christmas) Table

The turkeys come from farmer Anton Jacobs in The Netherlands. He keeps the birds with lots of care & love: they get plenty of outside & inside space (3x more than the minimum organic standard!), a natural feed & are kept antibiotic free. On the website you’ll find a video from him and more information and photos.

You can order your turkey online. You buy into a ‘lot’ – a selection of turkeys that have reached their target weight – with a specific number so all the meat is traceable. There’s two options: an oven-ready turkey for €69,95 or a stuffed & deboned turkey for €99,95. Once ordered you get it delivered to your door before Christmas. You can then let it slowly defrost in time for your Christmas meal. You’ll also receive instructions & an oven thermometer.

Well, it’s time to give this turkey a testrun!

My Review

The turkey got delivered to my door on the given time & I let it slowly defrost. I found the given instructions very clear and easy to follow. All you need to do is rub the turkey with some butter, place it on a roasting rack and cook according to the given time & temperatures. I did add a little sage on top (I LOVE sage and it goes so well with turkey) and some onions & oranges to catch all the roasting juices & make it look pretty for presenting. It’s not necessary but a bit of fun! Not long after I placed the turkey in the oven the house started smelling pretty good and three hours later a perfectly golden bird came out.

I let it rest for a while to let the meat settle and stay moist. In the meantime I used the roasting juices to make a super simple & yummy sauce. Because the turkey is deboned you can cut easy slices – something that’s a huge help for anyone who doesn’t regularly carve a turkey (that’s me!).

Now for the tasting, the best part. And the verdict? Hands down the best turkey & stuffing I ever had. Honestly. It came out moist, perfectly cooked and the meat was tender & flavoursome. The stuffing was super generous too and added a lovely sweetness & extra flavour.

Major plus points for me are:

+ all the work is done for you – delivery, deboning, stuffing, instructions
+ the stuffing is very flavoursome & generous
+ traceable wellfared turkey from boer Anton
+ foolproof instructions (especially with the oven thermometer)
+ very delicious, moist meat

– the turkey won’t fit into a small oven, so you’ll need to measure it out to make sure it fits
– it’s a little more pricey – although I think it’s a fair price for fair meat and totally worth it.

“And the verdict? Hands down the best turkey & stuffing I ever had. Honestly.”

I actually never prepared a turkey before myself so I was a little apprehensive about ruining this one. But it was SO easy! Clearly, I’m a fan and I want to serve this at our family Christmas meal this year. I think this is a great alternative to anyone who wants to serve a more conscious meat during Christmas. You get to share the story about where it comes from too! Discount Code (Kortingscode)

  • Reply Stefanie van Wijk November 12, 2019 at 9:34 am

Oh YES! I would love to win this stuffed turkey. I’m hosting a Christmas dinner for 25 people and I have no idea how to manage this.. :O We have guests coming over from Indonesia, so to serve a traditional Turkey would be so cool. And if it comes pre-stuffed, that’s even better, than I have more time to make other dishes! 🙂 *fingerscrossed

WOW, de kalkoen ziet er zo lekker uit! Wij gaan koken voor een grote groep vrienden. Mijn vriend kookt altijd de lekkerste gerechten en nu is het tijd dat ik een keer in de keuken ga shinen. THE PRESSURE IS REAL want hóé ga ik hem nou overtreffen?

Well I would LOVE to win this turkey after your mouthwatering blog! Too bad I can’t add audio, otherwise my family and I would have imitated the sound of a couple of turkey’s singing a Christmas song to show you our enthusiasm for the price! 😬 #pleasedontaddaudiooptionsnow

Inviting everyone I know who may be alone for Christmas – would be great to add a turkey to the table

  • Reply JP Bezuidenhout November 17, 2019 at 9:45 pm

Looks delicious and we are hosting a bunch of people on Christmas Day so this would be great. As South Africans we are used to warm Christmas better suited to barbecue so would be great to have something traditional but also healthy and easy to prepare here in the cold…
