The Easiest Way To Clean Your Chemex

May 29, 2020

We love a good cup of coffee at our home. We often share a lovely brew in the morning together, and even our two year old wants to join in now (but not quite sure how we’ll go about that one, ha). When you source delicious coffee, it’s all the more important to brew it the right way to get the most out of those beans. And clean equipment is where that starts! For a long time I struggled to get my Chemex clean, until I figured out how simple and easy it can be. Only one simple ingredient and a little time, no scrubbing needed. Let’s get started!

A Chemex coffee maker is a simple glass brewing vessel that allows you to make great pourovers at home. Now we actually don’t use the Chemex filters very often – we usually just use the Chemex with our Kalita Wave dripper on top (I know, a bit random). It’s just the perfect serving vessel and size and aesthetically quite pleasing too! The Chemex also works great when we’re brewing for guests. So it’s fair to say that it gets used quite a lot in our home. And you’re starting to see it…

As a former barista, I know the importance of keeping your coffee equipment clean. But somehow I got a bit lazy when it came to my Chemex – for a long time I’ve been thinking I needed to get a specific brush to even get in there and it just seemed too much effort really. But it turns out to be a LOT easier. So if you’re in the same boat and your Chemex is looking kinda yucky, I got the most simple way for you to clean it and make it look like new in no time. No special equipment needed!

So here’s my simple hack to get your Chemex clean – and it will make a difference! Not only will it make your Chemex look like new again (and therefore very lovely), it will also improve the flavour and aroma of your coffee. All you need is a few minutes of your time + one simple household ingredient. This is a safe, effective, cheap & environmentally friendly way to look after your Chemex or any other glass coffee pots that you might use. Looking after the things we own prolongs their lifespan and our joy in using those items so it’s always well worth it!

Let’s get that Chemex clean, shall we?

How to Clean Your Chemex Coffee Maker

The easiest way to keep your Chemex clean and remove any coffee & mineral build up without scrubbing or fancy equipment!

What you’ll need:

  • A dirty Chemex
  • Baking soda
  • Hot water
  • Sponge + washing up liquid

Step 1 – Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the Chemex.

Step 2 – Fill to the top with hot water (doesn’t need to be boiling) – stop halfway to swirl the water around so the baking soda is fully dissolved before filling to the top. Leave for about 15-30 minutes (or longer if you have other things to do).

Step 3 – Tip out about 3/4 of the water. Use the remaining water to swirl the Chemex around to catch any stuck on bits and rinse with clean water. The inside should now be clean, but if there’s persistent build up, you can repeat the process.

Step 4 – For the outside, a simple sponge + washing up liquid should do the trick. Remove the wooden handle by untying the cord before cleaning to prolong its lifespan. Simply dry & put the handle back on.

Your Chemex is now sparkling clean and ready for many more years of brewing! For everyday maintenance, just rinse with water after use. Doing this regularly – when you start seeing a little built up – will keep your Chemex clean and shiny like new.
